Frequently Answered Questions
What is Microblading?
Microblading, also known as Eyebrow Embroidery, is a cosmetic procedure classified under semi-permanent makeup. Unlike traditional cosmetic tattooing, microblading is less invasive and provides a natural and realistic appearance to the eyebrows. The results typically last between one to three years, depending on factors such as skin type and skincare routine. The procedure involves using a specialised hand tool equipped with ultra-fine needles to etch hair-like strokes into the skin, creating a natural-looking eyebrow effect. Microblading is ideal for individuals looking to enhance their eyebrows, especially those with sparse, thinning, or over-plucked brows. The pigments used are carefully selected to match the client's natural or desired brow color, taking into account the skin tone for optimal results.
Duration of the Procedure
The initial microblading session takes approximately two hours. During this session, the brow technician will consult with the client to determine the desired shape and style of the eyebrows, seeking the client's approval before proceeding. After finalizing the design, the technician will select the appropriate pigment color. Once the client is satisfied with these choices, the microblading process begins.
A follow-up session, typically scheduled 4-6 weeks after the initial procedure, is necessary to perform any minor touch-ups. This session lasts about 1.5 hours and ensures that the brows are refined to achieve the perfect look.
Healing Process
After the procedure, the eyebrow area may appear slightly red, and the color will initially be very dark. This is a normal part of the healing process. The color will gradually fade by up to 40% as the brows heal. In the days following the procedure, slight scabbing may occur; it is crucial not to pick at these scabs, as doing so can damage the skin and affect the final result. The eyebrows will lighten over time, with the healing process taking approximately 7-14 days. It takes about a month for the color to fully settle, during which the skin may have a milky appearance, a phenomenon known as "milk skin." This occurs as the skin heals internally. Once the healing is complete, the true color of the brows will emerge.
Importance of the Touch-Up Session
A touch-up session after 4-6 weeks is essential, as healing varies from person to person, and the outcome may differ. Some areas may not retain pigment as well during the initial session and will need to be refilled. Adjustments to pigment color, brow thickness, and additional strokes can also be made during this session. Individuals with oily skin may require a deeper shade during the touch-up, as oils can lighten the pigment. This session is crucial to refine the brows and ensure they retain their color and shape for an extended period.
Timing for Touch-Ups
Touch-up sessions should not occur earlier than four weeks after the initial session. This allows the pigment to fully settle into the skin and prevents potential scar damage, as the tissue needs adequate time to heal.
Pain and Sensation
The microblading procedure is generally considered to be mildly painful or painless. Before beginning, a topical anesthetic is applied to numb the area, with additional applications during the procedure as needed. Clients describe the sensation as ranging from light cat scratches to no feeling at all, depending on their sensitivity to anesthetics. Common anesthetics used include lidocaine, prilocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine, and epinephrine.
Following the procedure, some redness and slight swelling are normal, with clients often likening the sensation to a light sunburn.
Longevity of Microblading
Microblading results are not as permanent as traditional tattoos, as the pigments are not implanted as deeply into the skin. The effects typically last 1-2 years, influenced by skin type (normal, oily, dry) and age (young or mature). Skincare routines also impact the longevity of results; for instance, clients who tan frequently or use skincare products containing AHA or glycolic acid may experience faster fading due to increased skin exfoliation. To maintain the brows' appearance, a touch-up is recommended every 12-18 months. Over time, the microbladed area will fade, though a slight shadow may remain.
Pre and Post-Care Procedures
Adhering to pre and post-care instructions is essential for achieving optimal results.
Pre-Procedure Guidelines:
-
Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, and any vitamins that may thin the blood for 24 hours prior.
-
Refrain from tanning to allow accurate assessment of your natural skin tone.
-
Avoid facial scrubs or chemical peels for at least two weeks before the procedure.
-
Arrive with your usual brow makeup applied to provide the technician with an idea of your preferred look.
Post-Procedure Care:
-
One hour after treatment, wipe the brow area 6-7 times with a damp cotton pad.
-
Apply a thin layer of healing balm once daily for 5-7 days.
-
Avoid excessive application of healing balm.
-
Keep the brow area dry for 14 days. When showering, avoid getting water on your face, and cleanse around the brows carefully.
-
Refrain from applying makeup to the brow area for at least 10-14 days to prevent infection.
-
Expect slight itching, redness, and swelling, which should subside within 48 hours. Scabbing and peeling may begin 4-5 days post-treatment; do not peel or pick at the scabs to avoid affecting pigmentation.
-
Avoid swimming, tanning, and saunas for at least 14 days.
-
Do not use facial scrubs or chemical peels for two weeks post-procedure.
